About Me

My name is Joe Hobson.

I was born on January the 9th, 1986 in London (UK) but grew up in the Boscombe area near Bournemouth - Home to Europes first and probably last artificial surfing reef.

Growing up on the beach I have surfed since a young age but only seriously since I was old enough to drive and therefore find half decent waves...some closer to home then I had thought possible. To this day I have had the best waves in the UK within a 40 minute drive of my home town tucked up neatly in the British Channel. I am proud to be an English surfer.

I studied marketing at the University of Plymouth where I obtained a first class honors degree in Marketing (2:1). I have also completed my Lifeguard training and Surf Instructor training in 2007 building upon these in 2010 by gaining my level 2 Surf Instructors certificate.

I have worked within most aspects of the surf industry over the years ranging from ding repair, shop work, surf instructing, working for some of Europe's most popular surf magazines and eventually managed to launch my own series of surf travel businesses in Morocco, France and Indonesia in 2008/2009.

My main passion in life is traveling, surfing acts as a medium for this and it is impossible for me to travel anywhere without a coastline.

I often get criticized for "selling out" surfing or forgetting what surfing is really about. It is true I play a small part in the increase of crowds in the water but in response to this 90% of the worlds surfers surf in 1% of the ocean so surely I am merely fueling what surfing is really about, the desire to travel, learn and explore? For me there is no greater pleasure then sharing my passion with others who don't try the sport to look cool or macho but rather have an innocent attraction to something that is purely fun. I see myself as one of the very lucky few who not only enjoy their work but also help others in simply having a great time and hopefully I have a positive effect on peoples lives along the way.
